“No Understanding of India”: MEA Hits Back at NGO Reports After Tense Oslo Press Clash

India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) strongly responded to questions raised during a press interaction in Oslo, Norway, after concerns related to press freedom and human rights in India were brought up.
The exchange turned tense when Indian officials criticized reports by certain NGOs and argued that many global perceptions about India are based on incomplete understanding.
During the interaction, MEA Secretary (West) Sibi George defended India’s democratic structure and emphasized the country’s scale and diversity.
He stated that many people fail to understand the complexity of India and instead rely on reports from organizations that, according to him, do not fully understand the country’s realities.
The remarks came during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Europe visit and quickly became a topic of discussion across political and diplomatic circles.
George highlighted India’s democratic values by pointing to the country’s electoral system, stating that citizens have the power to vote and change governments freely.
He described this as one of the strongest examples of democratic rights and human rights in practice. Indian officials also stressed that India’s media landscape is vast, with hundreds of television channels and publications operating across multiple languages.
The incident has drawn attention internationally, with supporters seeing the response as a firm defense of India’s democratic image, while critics continue debating issues related to press freedom and public accountability.
The exchange has once again highlighted how global narratives and diplomatic discussions can often lead to differing perspectives.
