NDMC vice chairman leads plantation drive

Reinforcing the spirit of collective responsibility, community ownership, and environmental stewardship, the Vice Chairman of NDMC, Kuljeet Singh Chahal, on Sunday led a plantation drive under the initiative of ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam.’
The campaign was conducted at GPRA Type-2 Quarters, Sarojini Nagar, under the inspiration from the visionary initiative of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam”, which encourages citizens to honour their mothers by nurturing the environment and contributing to a greener future.
According to a press release, the drive was organised in close coordination with the RWAs. RWA President Saurabh Kumar, Secretary Keshav Kumar Chaudhary, RWA members, children, senior citizens, and NDMC field staff actively participated, making the programme a true people-led green initiative.
Speaking on the occasion, Chahal said that the drive stood out because it transformed the plantation into a shared emotional and civic responsibility, rather than a symbolic exercise.
Residents Become Green Guardians — Saplings of Peepal and Ashok were planted in the colony. Residents voluntarily adopted the plants, committing to their care and survival — turning each sapling into a living symbol of family responsibility and environmental protection.
“This campaign connects emotions with action. A tree planted in the name of one’s mother becomes a promise to protect nature, nurture the city, and safeguard the future of our children,” said Chahal.
Chahal shared that NDMC has developed a year-round Green Calendar, under which every Sunday is dedicated to plantation drives across different NDMC localities.
The programme is being supported by the horticulture, health, civil, and sanitation departments to ensure scientific plantation, survival, maintenance, and monitoring of saplings.
He emphasised that urban greenery is not a luxury but a necessity, and citizen participation is the key to building climate-resilient cities. During the visit, a meeting with RWA members was also held to discuss issues related to inadequate water supply in the GPRA Type-2 Colony.
The proposal for expediting the new water pipeline from Netaji Nagar was reviewed in the presence of NDMC Water Supply Department officials.
