NDMC vice chairman Chahal leads plantation drive at Laxmibai Nagar

New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) Vice Chairman Kuljeet Singh Chahal on Sunday led a plantation drive at Laxmibai Nagar under the Prime Minister’s ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ initiative.
The drive reinforces NDMC’s push for citizen-led environmental action. The drive, held at Palika Gram, marked the start of a regular Sunday campaign aimed at expanding green cover and promoting community participation in urban conservation.
Chahal planted saplings along with residents of the NDMC housing complex, members of the Residents’ Welfare Association and officials from the council’s horticulture, civil and health departments. Participants planted trees in the name of their mothers and pledged to take responsibility for their care and protection. Addressing the gathering, the NDMC Vice Chairman said the campaign was not limited to tree plantation alone but was intended to build a long-term bond between citizens and the environment.
“Each sapling planted in a mother’s name reflects both an emotional connection and a commitment to nurture nature,” Chahal said, urging residents to ensure the survival and growth of the trees.
Officials said saplings of peepal, neem, ashoka, champa and other species suitable for urban areas were planted during the drive. The plantation was carried out in common areas of the residential complex to ensure visibility, accessibility and regular upkeep by local residents.
Chahal said the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign would now be conducted every Sunday as part of NDMC’s annual horticulture action plan. Highlighting NDMC’s broader green initiatives, Chahal said plantation activities under the same campaign had also been conducted at the embassy premises of over 20 countries, including Australia, Denmark, South Korea, Mauritius, the Netherlands, Poland, Sri Lanka, Portugal, Austria, Lithuania and Russia. He said the effort symbolised global cooperation on environmental protection and climate responsibility.
During his visit, Chahal also inspected the Palika Gram residential complex and reviewed civic facilities.
He directed the Building Maintenance Department to address issues related to seepage, repair boundary walls and gates, and ensure the construction of ramps for senior citizens to improve accessibility.
