NDMC inducts two Mechanical Road Sweepers in Connaught Place

The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) on Tuesday inducted two CNG-operated Mechanical Road Sweepers (MRS) in Connaught Place. The initiative aims to strengthen road-cleaning operations in high-footfall and high-security areas while addressing concerns related to air and dust pollution.
The machines were inaugurated by NDMC Vice Chairperson Kuljeet Singh Chahal, who said the induction of CNG-based sweepers would enhance the efficiency of road-cleaning operations and contribute to improved air quality. The new sweepers form part of NDMC’s broader plan to expand mechanised sweeping across its jurisdiction, particularly in areas that witness heavy traffic and large pedestrian movement.
Chahal said NDMC is already carrying out mechanised sweeping of major roads during both day and night shifts. The use of Mechanical Road Sweepers, he said, plays a critical role in reducing road dust, removing debris, and maintaining cleaner streets. “Mechanised cleaning is essential not only for cleanliness but also for public safety and air quality,” he said.
According to NDMC officials, the civic body aims to sweep nearly 415 kilometres of roads every day. To meet this target and effectively control dust pollution in the NDMC area, the procurement of additional sweepers was necessary.
The newly inducted machines are powered by compressed natural gas (CNG). These are also in compliance with National Green Tribunal (NGT) directions that prohibit the registration of diesel vehicles in Delhi.
