Myanmar assures India its territory won’t be used against New Delhi’s security interests

Myanmar President U Min Aung Hlaing on Monday assured Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Myanmar’s territory would not be allowed to be used for activities harmful to India’s security interests. The assurance came during wide-ranging bilateral talks held in New Delhi aimed at strengthening cooperation in trade, defence, energy, border management and regional security.
The two leaders reviewed the full spectrum of India-Myanmar relations and discussed ways to deepen cooperation in sectors such as investment, healthcare, education, energy and emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence. India also reiterated its support for Myanmar’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said both sides emphasized the importance of preventing the misuse of their territories for activities that could threaten each other's security. Myanmar’s commitment is particularly significant as the country shares a 1,640-km border with India, including sensitive regions bordering Manipur and Nagaland.

During the discussions, Prime Minister Modi also raised the issue of Myanmar’s ongoing peace process. India reiterated its longstanding position of supporting peace, stability, inclusivity and dialogue involving all stakeholders in Myanmar.
The visit marks President Min Aung Hlaing’s first official trip to India since assuming office after Myanmar’s parliamentary elections earlier this year. He is accompanied by a high-level delegation comprising ministers, senior officials and business leaders.
Officials said the visit has reaffirmed the shared commitment of both nations to expand their strategic partnership and promote peace, connectivity and economic growth in the region. The Myanmar President is also scheduled to visit Mumbai for interactions with business and industry leaders.
