Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project 80% complete; first section to open in 2027

India's first high-speed rail corridor, the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train project, has reached a major milestone, with nearly 80% of the construction completed, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on Saturday.
The first operational stretch, connecting Surat and Bilimora in Gujarat, is expected to be inaugurated in 2027, with the remaining sections opening in phases thereafter.
Speaking during an event in Sanand, Gujarat, Vaishnaw said work on the ambitious project is progressing rapidly. After the Surat-Bilimora section becomes operational, the next phases will include Vapi-Surat, Vapi-Ahmedabad, Ahmedabad-Thane, and finally the complete Ahmedabad-Mumbai corridor. The minister expressed confidence that the project would be completed within the planned timeline.
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train project is India's first dedicated high-speed rail network and is being developed with Japanese technology and financial assistance.

Once fully operational, the corridor is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad, improve regional connectivity and mark a major leap in India's transport infrastructure.
