Mukarba Chowk underpass nears completion, set to open soon

The long-awaited Mukarba Chowk underpass in North Delhi is nearly complete and is expected to be opened to the public within the next few days, offering major relief to commuters facing chronic traffic congestion at one of the city’s busiest intersections.
Public Works Department Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh conducted an on-site inspection of the project on Wednesday and reviewed the final stages of construction. Officials informed him that around 98 per cent of the work has been completed, with finishing touches currently underway.
The underpass has been built at Mukarba Chowk on Outer Ring Road using advanced jack pushing technology with pre-cast reinforced concrete box structures. The project aims to ease congestion at the busy junction, which often witnesses long traffic jams during peak hours.
Speaking during the inspection, the minister said the area has been a major bottleneck for years. He noted that the new infrastructure is designed to address this problem and improve traffic flow significantly. He added that the project will be inaugurated soon under the leadership of the Chief Minister.
The underpass will provide seamless connectivity between Badli and Rohini on one side and Azadpur and Jahangirpuri on the other. This will allow vehicles to bypass the congested intersection, reducing delays and improving travel efficiency.
According to officials, nearly 15,800 vehicles are expected to use the underpass daily. The project is likely to reduce travel time by up to 10 minutes per vehicle and shorten the travel distance by around one kilometre. This is expected to translate into significant fuel savings for commuters.
