MK Stalin Resigns as Tamil Nadu CM After 2026 Election Results

In a major political development following the Assembly Election Results 2026, M. K. Stalin has stepped down as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu after his party’s electoral setback.
Sources confirmed that Stalin submitted his resignation to Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar at Lok Bhavan. As per constitutional convention, the Governor is expected to request him to continue as interim Chief Minister until a new government is formed.
The resignation comes amid sweeping political changes across several states following the 2026 Assembly elections.
In West Bengal, Trinamool Congress leader Mahua Moitra acknowledged the party’s defeat and said it respects the people’s mandate. She stated that the will of the electorate is supreme and reaffirmed the party’s commitment to continue its political and ideological fight.
The election results have triggered a major shift in political power across states including Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and Kerala. Incumbent Chief Ministers such as Mamata Banerjee, M. K. Stalin, and Pinarayi Vijayan are set to exit office following electoral losses.
In West Bengal, the Bharatiya Janata Party is poised to form its first government after a decisive victory. Suvendu Adhikari defeated Mamata Banerjee in the high-profile Bhabanipur constituency, marking a significant political shift in the state.
Meanwhile, in Tamil Nadu, actor-politician Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, has emerged as the single-largest party with 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly, reshaping the state’s political landscape.
The latest electoral cycle also saw dramatic changes in Kerala, where traditional political strongholds witnessed unexpected results, signalling a broader transformation in voter sentiment across the country.
