Metro disruption after man falls on track at Vishwavidyalaya

Services on the Delhi Metro’s Yellow Line were disrupted for nearly one-and-a-half hours during the Monday morning rush after a 52-year-old man fell onto the tracks at Vishwavidyalaya station.
The incident led to delays, overcrowding, and longer waiting times across several stations on one of the Capital’s busiest corridors. “A passenger fell on the track at Vishwavidyalaya station and sustained injuries. He was shifted to the hospital. Services were regulated briefly for safety,” a senior officer from the Metro unit said.
According to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), train movement on the Yellow Line was slowed as a precaution after the incident. In a post on X, DMRC said there was a delay in services “due to a passenger on the track at Vishwavidyalaya metro station.”
The disruption occurred during peak office hours, affecting thousands of commuters travelling between North and Central Delhi. The Yellow Line connects key areas, including Samaypur Badli, Kashmere Gate, Central Secretariat, and HUDA City Centre, making it one of the busiest routes in the network.
Eyewitnesses and commuters reported heavy crowding on platforms as trains arrived at longer intervals. “It’s office time, and there is a huge rush. Even when trains are coming, they are too crowded to board easily,” said Amit, a commuter waiting at one of the stations.
The injured was identified as Anil Kumar, a resident of Karawal Nagar in northeast Delhi. Police said Kumar told them that he accidentally fell onto the tracks after losing balance while standing close to the edge of the platform. “He stated that he went too close to the edge and lost balance. There is no foul play suspected,” an officer said.
Kumar suffered a head injury but was conscious when admitted to the hospital. His condition is reported to be stable. Officials clarified that the incident appears to be accidental and not a case of intentional jumping.
Following standard safety protocols, train services were temporarily regulated on the affected stretch to ensure passenger safety and allow emergency response teams to act. This resulted in a cascading effect on train frequency across the line, leading to crowd build-up at multiple stations. Metro authorities restored normal services after about 90 minutes. However, the ripple impact of the disruption was felt for some time even after operations resumed.
