MCD standing committee clears plan to rename civic zones

The standing committee of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi on Wednesday approved a proposal to rename its zones to align them with the Delhi government’s revenue districts in a move aimed at improving coordination and administrative clarity.
Officials said the decision is intended to reduce overlap between civic and revenue jurisdictions and streamline governance across departments. Under the approved proposal, several MCD zones will be renamed. Narela zone will be called Outer North, Civil Lines will become North, Rohini will be renamed North West, and Keshavpuram will be known as North Central. Karol Bagh will be renamed City Sadar Paharganj, while Najafgarh will be called South West. In East Delhi, Shahdara South will be renamed East, and Shahdara North will become North East. The South and West zones will retain their current names.
According to an official statement issued by the civic body, the proposal follows the reorganisation of Delhi’s revenue districts carried out in December last year. The number of districts was increased from 11 to 13 as part of that exercise.
At present, the MCD is divided into 12 zones. New Delhi remains a separate revenue district under the New Delhi Municipal Council and is not part of the MCD structure.
Standing committee chairperson Satya Sharma said the renaming exercise is aimed at improving coordination between various government departments.
She said aligning civic zones with revenue districts will help simplify administrative processes and reduce confusion.
