MCD collects Rs 2,700 crore in property tax

In a remarkable fiscal surge, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has raked in over Rs 2,700 crore in property tax, 45 per cent higher than the last year’s corresponding period. The taxpayer base has swelled by nearly 21 per cent, jumping from 10,31,177 to 12,43,375 compared with FY 2024-25.
The number of total property taxpayers has increased from 10,31,177 to 12,43,375 in comparison to the last financial year 2024-25, marking an impressive growth of nearly 21 per cent. The Assessment & Collection department attributed this record-breaking performance to the multi-pronged strategy adopted under MCD Commissioner Ashwani Kumar, with a strong focus on taxpayer facilitation, compliance enhancement, and effective enforcement.
The key driver for the record collection has been the Tax Amnesty Scheme called SUNIYO 2025-26. Under this initiative, taxpayers get a waiver of interest and penalties by paying the current year’s tax (2025-26) plus the last five years (2020-21 to 2024-25) property tax dues. Due to this, many taxpayers who had earlier filed incorrect Property Tax Returns (PTRs) and paid lesser property tax availed this Scheme.
Additionally, taxpayers who had previously paid property tax only once or twice of financial year and failed to pay tax for subsequent financial years also availed this Scheme. As a result, approx 1.70 lakh taxpayers have availed the SUNIYO Scheme, and as a result, property tax revenue amounting to Rs 933 crore has been received up to 31st December 2025, which includes property tax of Rs 320 crore from 91,000 new taxpayers.
However, there are still more than 6 lakh recorded taxpayers who have either paid lesser property tax or have not paid property tax at all and have not availed the SUNIYO Scheme. Further, all taxpayers who have not yet been brought in tax net are also urged to avail the scheme to save themselves from penal action under the DMC Act 1957.
The MCD appeals to these defaulters to avail the SUNIYO Scheme and clear all the property tax dues/liabilities. Subsequent to the closing of the scheme period, coercive action will be initiated against the defaulters/non-filers taxpayers who have not paid property tax.
The SUNIYO Scheme is extended up to 31 January 2026 with a small penalty of five per cent. Taxpayers can avail these benefits through MCD’s property tax portal.
Rs 35 crore for microchipping, vaccinating stray dogs in upcoming MCD budget
New Delhi: In the upcoming Budget, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has earmarked around Rs 35 crore specifically for microchipping and vaccination of stray dogs, officials aware of the matter said. Microchipping is the implantation of an integrated chip under an animal’s skin for recording information such as vaccination history, location and identity.
MCD officials said this allocation is for better managing the city’s stray dog population, a step that reflects growing concerns about public safety and animal health.
According to officials, Rs 20 crore of this allocation will be spent directly by the corporation, while the remaining Rs 15 crore will be channelled through partnerships with non-Governmental organisations (NGOs) that have experience working in animal welfare.
“The collaboration with NGOs is intended to expand reach and accelerate the fieldwork needed to inoculate and track street dogs,” officials said. The corporation has also set a target to microchip and vaccinate at least 25,000 dogs across the city in the next 2-3 months, officials said.
“Microchipping will help record key information such as vaccination history, location and identity, which can be used later to monitor health and respond quickly in cases of dog bites or disease outbreaks,” they said, adding that the cost of a single microchip will be roughly around Rs 300.
Further, the corporation is planning to set aside Rs 60 lakh for catching and relocating monkeys in the national Capital in its bid to reduce human-animal conflict in the Capital.
