Mayapuri factory fire triggers building collapse, latest in series of blazes across Delhi

A portion of a factory building collapsed after a major fire broke out at an industrial unit in west Delhi’s Mayapuri area on Thursday, prompting a massive firefighting operation involving 18 fire tenders, officials said.
According to the Delhi Fire Service (DFS), a distress call was received regarding the blaze at a factory in Phase I of the Mayapuri Industrial Area in the morning. The fire rapidly spread through a factory operating on the first and second floors of the building, which specialised in steel cutting and packing materials.
Officials said the structure, spread across nearly 500 square yards, consists of a basement, ground floor and two upper floors. As the fire intensified, additional fire tenders rushed to the spot to contain the flames. During firefighting operations, portions of the first and second floors collapsed due to structural damage from the blaze, raising concerns about the building’s stability.
“The building remains in a dangerous condition due to the damage caused by the fire and the subsequent collapse,” a DFS official said.
The fire was brought under control by around 2.20 pm. Officials added that no casualties or injuries had been reported by the time this report was filed.
The incident is the latest in a series of recent fire-related emergencies reported in the capital, highlighting concerns over fire safety standards in industrial and commercial establishments.
On June 6, a massive fire broke out at a plastic factory in Delhi’s Narela Industrial Area, triggering a large-scale response from fire officials. No casualties were reported in that incident either.
The city has also witnessed several deadly fires in recent weeks, including the blaze at a Malviya Nagar hotel that claimed 22 lives and renewed scrutiny of fire safety compliance and emergency preparedness across the capital.
Authorities are yet to ascertain the cause of the Mayapuri fire. An investigation has been initiated to determine whether any safety violations contributed to the incident. Fire officials are also assessing the damaged building’s structural condition before allowing any further access to the premises.
