Mandoli jail inmate stabbed by fellow prisoners

A 41-year-old inmate lodged in Mandoli jail in northeast Delhi was allegedly stabbed by fellow prisoners inside the prison premises, prompting police to register a case and launch an investigation into the assault, officials said on Thursday.
The incident came to light after Harsh Vihar police received information from GTB Hospital regarding the admission of an injured inmate from Mandoli jail on May 6. During the inquiry, the injured prisoner was identified as Javed, son of Kamsuddin, who is currently lodged in Mandoli jail in connection with a narcotics case registered at Seemapuri police station under the NDPS Act.
Police said preliminary investigation revealed that Javed was allegedly attacked by other inmates inside the jail complex during the evening hours.
He sustained stab injuries in the assault and was immediately shifted to GTB Hospital for treatment. After receiving medical care, the inmate was discharged from the hospital, officials said.
A case under Section 118(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, related to voluntarily causing hurt using dangerous weapons or means, has been registered at Harsh Vihar police station. Police said they are trying to ascertain the sequence of events that led to the attack and identify the inmates involved in the stabbing.
Investigators are also examining whether the assault was linked to any previous rivalry or dispute inside the jail. Officials said statements are being recorded and assistance is being sought from jail authorities as part of the probe.
The incident has once again raised concerns over violence and security lapses inside prisons in the national capital.
