Man gets 10-year jail for selling spurious liquor

A court here has sentenced a man to 10-year rigorous imprisonment for selling spurious liquor that claimed two lives in 2019, a Government lawyer said on Wednesday. 

Additional District and Sessions Judge Vishnu Chandra Vesh on Tuesday also imposed a fine of Rs 2 lakh on the convict, Sonu, after holding him guilty under Sections 272 (adulteration of food or drink intended for sale), 273 (sale of noxious food or drink), 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 328 (causing hurt by means of poison) of the IPC, and Section 60 of the Excise Act. 

The court directed that half of the fine amount be paid as compensation to the victims’ family, Government counsel Arun Sharma told PTI. 

According to the prosecution, the case was registered against Sonu at the Bhorakala police station after he allegedly sold spurious liquor in Sisauli village on August 4, 2019.  Two people died and another fell seriously ill after consuming the illicit liquor, Sharma said.
