Mamata Banerjee moves Calcutta High Court challenging Bhabanipur Assembly Election Result

Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee has approached the Calcutta High Court challenging the outcome of the Bhabanipur Assembly election, a seat she lost to BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari in the recently concluded West Bengal Assembly polls.
Banerjee filed an election petition before the High Court on Tuesday, seeking judicial scrutiny of the result. According to TMC sources, she personally visited the court registry to affirm the petition challenging the outcome of the election.
In the Bhabanipur constituency, Suvendu Adhikari defeated Mamata Banerjee by a margin of 15,105 votes. The seat had long been considered a stronghold of the TMC leader, making the result one of the most significant outcomes of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections.
The counting of votes for the Assembly polls was conducted on May 4, with the BJP securing a decisive victory across the state. Following the party’s landmark win, Suvendu Adhikari was sworn in as West Bengal’s first BJP Chief Minister.
The election petition is expected to initiate legal proceedings over the Bhabanipur result, with the High Court likely to examine the grounds raised by Banerjee in her challenge.
The development adds a new legal dimension to West Bengal’s evolving political landscape, where the rivalry between the TMC and BJP continues to dominate state politics following the historic election outcome.
