Mamata Banerjee attacks rebel leaders with ‘Girgiti’ poem after Bengal Election setback

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has launched a sharp attack on internal dissenters within the Trinamool Congress (TMC) through a strongly worded poem titled “Girgiti”, following the party’s recent electoral setback in the state.
The poem, which translates to “Chameleon”, is being seen as a direct message to rebel leaders and functionaries who have either resigned from organisational posts or openly criticised the party leadership after the poll rout.
In her poem, Banerjee used the metaphor of a chameleon to describe individuals who frequently change loyalty and political positions, accusing them of opportunism and betrayal during a critical phase for the party.
She further suggested that such leaders were undermining party workers and the organisation for personal gain, warning that consequences would follow for those who abandon the party in difficult times.
The poem comes amid visible unrest within the TMC, with multiple leaders stepping down from posts and expressing dissatisfaction over internal functioning and leadership decisions.
Political observers believe Banerjee’s poetic message is both a warning to dissidents and an attempt to reassert control over the party structure as it deals with internal instability following the electoral loss.
