3 killed, 2 injured as speeding vans collide on highway in Thane
A father and son were among three people killed and two others injured after two speeding vans collided on a highway near Malshej Ghat in Maharashtra's Thane district, police said on Monday.
The accident took place on Sunday morning on National Highway No. 61 in Murbad taluka.
A pickup van carrying three residents of Khedle-Talavale village collided head-on with a poultry van travelling towards Kalyan, a police official said.
The collision severely damaged the front cabins of both vehicles. All three occupants of the pickup van died at the spot. They were identified as Maruti Tukaram Khare, 55, his son Ajit Maruti Khapare, 25, and driver Ram Malu Sapate, 40, the official said.
Two people travelling in the poultry van sustained injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Police said both vehicles were speeding when the accident occurred. Following a preliminary inquiry, a case was registered against the driver of the poultry van under relevant legal provisions, Tokawade police station Assistant Inspector Sheetalkumar Naik said. (with inputs from PTI)
