Make Delhi best Capital city in world: VP to Rekha Gupta

Vice President CP Radhakrishnan called upon Chief Minister Rekha Gupta to make Delhi the best Capital city in the world. Speaking at the Constitution Day event at the Delhi Assembly, he released a coffee table book on the first elected Indian Speaker of the Central Legislative Assembly, Vithalbhai Patel.
“As a nation, we have changed from empowering women to letting women lead development. Rekha Gupta is an example of this great shift,” he said, and called upon her to make Delhi the best Capital city of the world.
The Vice President stressed that in the coming years, Delhi should be recognised as the best Capital city, and not Tokyo, London or some other city in America. He highlighted the historic significance of the Assembly building, noting that “assembly buildings also speak; the daily legislature is what it should be.”
Praising the central Government, he said in the last decade, their greatest achievement has been to lift 25 crore people out of poverty. The Vice President also reflected on the historic role of the Assembly building, which once housed the Imperial Legislative Council and the first Central Legislative Assembly, where critical debates on rights, citizenship, and representative governance took place.
He also said legislators should contribute constructively in the House through dialogue, debate and discussions. The Constitution is a “living document” that united India, Radhakrishnan said and added that during our journey of Amrit Kaal, we are marching towards “Viksit Bharat”, inspired by its principles, he said.
Commending the authors for their work, he said the book preserves history while connecting current and future generations with the sacrifices and trials of India’s forefathers. It serves as a reminder to citizens of the importance of democratic values, helping them stay rooted in India’s constitutional legacy while inspiring them to uphold these principles in everyday life.
The event was also attended by Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta, Delhi Cabinet Ministers and others. Former Governor of Assam Jagdish Mukhi, Member of Rajya Sabha Swati Maliwal, MLAs, Senior Leaders and Councillors were also present at the event.
Lt Governor Saxena administered the pledge to the people on the occasion of Constitution Day and as a part of the National observance, a three-minute short film prepared by the Government of India on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Constitution was also screened.
Saxena expressed his pleasure at the release of the Coffee Table Book documenting the unique legacy of the Delhi Legislative Assembly.
Speaking about the Coffee Table Book, Speaker Gupta said that it captures a century-long journey of India’s democratic evolution through rare archival photographs and key milestones, including the 2025 All India Speakers’ Conference commemorating 100 years since Shri Vithalbhai Patel became the first Indian Speaker of the Central Legislative Assembly.
Without naming the Opposition leaders, the CM said that those who carry the Constitution in their pockets or invoke it for convenience must study it in its true spirit, for every word embodies the essence of Indian democracy. She urged citizens to reject politics that creates a divide between words and actions, and instead uphold the Constitution with sincerity and commitment.
Describing the Indian Constitution as a remarkable document, she highlighted that it is divided into 25 parts, contains 448 Articles, and has undergone 106 amendments to date. She emphasised that the Constitution has succeeded in weaving together a nation as diverse as India, forming the bedrock of the world’s largest democracy.
