Maharashtra cabinet approves Rs 31793 crore Virar Alibaug mega corridor project

The Maharashtra government has granted administrative approval for the first phase of the ambitious Virar-Alibaug Multi-Modal Transport Corridor project, estimated to cost Rs 31,793.47 crore.
The 14-lane access-controlled corridor aims to significantly improve connectivity across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and link major infrastructure projects, including the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority, Navi Mumbai International Airport and the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link.
According to a government resolution issued by the Urban Development Department, the first phase of the corridor will cover a total length of 126.06 kilometres.
The mega infrastructure project will pass through 104 villages spread across Vasai, Bhiwandi, Kalyan, Ambernath, Panvel, Uran, Pen and Alibaug talukas.
The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation will execute the project.
The corridor is expected to connect several major highways and expressways, including NH-48 Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway, NH-848 Mumbai-Agra route, NH-61 Kalyan-Murbad-Nirmal road, the Mumbai-Vadodara Expressway, Mumbai-Pune Expressway and NH-66 Mumbai-Goa Highway.
Officials said nine major interchanges have been proposed along the corridor to improve regional traffic movement and reduce congestion.
The project is being viewed as a key infrastructure initiative aimed at easing travel across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region while strengthening logistics and industrial connectivity between Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and surrounding regions.
The corridor is also expected to support traffic movement linked to the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport and major port infrastructure in the region.
