LG, CM Rekha attend Ambedkar University convocation

Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Thursday attended the 14th annual convocation ceremony of Dr BR Ambedkar University Delhi. On the occasion, LG and the Chief Minister urged graduating students to use education as a tool for social responsibility and nation-building.
Addressing students on the university campus, the Lieutenant Governor said a degree should be viewed not only as an academic achievement but also as a commitment to society and the country. He said universities must prepare young people to face future challenges through innovation, research, and social engagement.
The convocation ceremony was attended by Education Minister Ashish Sood, university officials, faculty members, researchers, students, and guests. The programme began with an NCC guard of honour for the dignitaries.
Degrees were awarded to undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral students from different faculties. Research work in areas such as Development Studies, Human Ecology, Archaeology, Social Design, and Urban Studies was specially recognised during the event.
The university also released its newsletter and research compendium highlighting academic and research achievements. Officials said the institution completed uploading degree scrolls to DigiLocker as part of efforts to strengthen digital governance.
Speaking at the ceremony, Lieutenant Governor Sandhu said the university had established a strong identity in social sciences, humanities, and public engagement during the last 17 years. He noted that the institution started in 2008 with only a diploma programme and had now developed into a multi-disciplinary university offering a wide range of courses. He said convocation ceremonies represent an important turning point in students’ lives, marking the completion of one phase and the beginning of another filled with greater responsibilities.
The Lieutenant Governor praised the university’s work in implementing the National Education Policy and promoting research, Indian knowledge systems, entrepreneurship, and student support programmes. He said education must remain connected with society, innovation, and future needs.
Referring to rapid technological changes across the world, including artificial intelligence and evolving economic conditions, Sandhu said India’s youth population remained the country’s greatest strength. He urged universities to encourage multidisciplinary learning, entrepreneurship, vocational training, and industry collaboration. He also advised students to build qualities such as leadership, integrity, empathy, and public service while pursuing professional success.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta congratulated students receiving degrees and medals and described the ceremony as a recognition of years of hard work, discipline, and perseverance. She said convocation ceremonies are not limited to academic success but also represent a new responsibility towards society and the nation.
The Chief Minister noted that the university began with only 19 students and has now grown to more than 6,000 students. She said the institution has continued to promote the ideals of Babasaheb Ambedkar by encouraging social awareness, equality, and national consciousness among students.
The Chief Minister also referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s public appeals related to resource conservation and self-reliance. She said small efforts made by citizens in daily life could strengthen the country’s economy and support the vision of a developed India by 2047.
Education Minister Ashish Sood said education remains one of the strongest forces for transforming individuals and society. He said students must move beyond degrees and continue learning throughout their lives, especially at a time when technology and artificial intelligence are reshaping the world.
Sood also spoke about responsible citizenship, honesty, patience, and empathy. Referring to the Prime Minister’s call for energy conservation and greater use of public transport, he said nation-building depends on meaningful contributions made by ordinary citizens.
