Lavrov to visit India for BRICS FM meeting

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is set to visit New Delhi next month to participate in the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced on Wednesday.
Speaking at a media briefing in Moscow, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said that Lavrov will attend the meeting scheduled for May 14–15 under India’s presidency. The session is expected to provide a platform for in-depth discussions on key global issues, including reforms in global governance and enhancing the role of emerging economies.
Zakharova noted that the meeting will also focus on strengthening strategic cooperation within BRICS and preparations for the upcoming summit later this year. Participation from foreign ministers of partner countries is also expected during select sessions.
During his visit, Lavrov will hold bilateral talks with India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. The discussions will cover a wide range of issues, including bilateral relations, high-level engagements, and coordination on upcoming diplomatic interactions.
Special emphasis will be placed on preparations for meetings of the Inter-Governmental Russian-Indian Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technical and Cultural Cooperation, alongside other matters of mutual interest.
The visit follows a recent telephonic conversation between Jaishankar and Lavrov, during which both leaders exchanged views on the West Asia conflict and reviewed progress in bilateral cooperation.
India is currently holding the BRICS chairmanship for 2026 under the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability,” reflecting a people-centric approach highlighted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the previous summit.
BRICS, originally formed as BRIC in 2006, has evolved into a key platform for cooperation among major emerging economies, with South Africa joining the group in 2010.
The bloc continues to play an influential role in shaping global economic and political discourse.
