Kharge urges PM Modi to hold all-party meet before revised Delimitation Bill

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him to convene an all-party meeting before the government reintroduces the revised Delimitation Bill during the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament. Kharge said a proposal with far-reaching implications for India's federal structure and parliamentary representation should be discussed with all political parties before being tabled in Parliament.

In his letter, Kharge recalled that the Congress had earlier sought wider consultations on the issue and stressed that building political consensus is essential before moving ahead with any changes to constituency boundaries.

He argued that delimitation could significantly impact the representation of states in the Lok Sabha and should therefore be handled through an inclusive and transparent process.

The request comes ahead of the Monsoon Session, where the government is expected to revisit the revised Delimitation Bill. The issue has remained politically sensitive, with several opposition parties expressing concerns over its potential impact on the balance of representation among states. Whether the Centre agrees to hold broader consultations before introducing the legislation is expected to be closely watched in the coming days.
