KDMC Doctor Assault Case: Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre remanded to police custody till July 14

Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre, arrested for allegedly assaulting doctors and medical staff at a Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC)-run hospital, was on Friday produced before the Kalyan Sessions Court, which remanded him and three co-accused to police custody till July 14.
Mhatre was arrested after a video showing him allegedly slapping and punching doctors at Shastri Nagar Hospital in Dombivli went viral, triggering widespread outrage among the medical fraternity and prompting protests across Maharashtra.
Before the hearing, Mhatre sought permission to appear before the court through video conferencing, citing health issues, including high blood pressure and vomiting. However, the court rejected the plea and directed that he be produced physically before the judge.
According to police, the assault occurred after the relatives of a newborn were advised by doctors to shift the infant to another hospital due to the non-availability of beds in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The relatives allegedly called Mhatre, who then arrived at the hospital with his supporters and allegedly attacked the doctors and staff.
The incident sparked a strike by doctors and healthcare workers, who demanded strict action against the accused and enhanced security at hospitals. Two doctors who were allegedly assaulted have also resigned, citing severe psychological trauma following the incident.
Police said the investigation is continuing and further evidence is being collected in the case.
