Kane Williamson retires from International Cricket, ends glorious 15-year career

New Zealand cricket legend and former captain Kane Williamson has announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing the curtain down on an illustrious career that spanned more than 15 years across all formats of the game.
The 35-year-old batting maestro confirmed his decision on Friday, stating that after careful reflection he felt it was the right time to step away from international cricket. Williamson said he had always given his best for New Zealand and wanted to leave the game on his own terms.
“I've always felt a strong drive and hunger for international cricket, and I take pride in knowing I've given it my all in every match I've played for New Zealand,” Williamson said in a statement released by New Zealand Cricket.
Williamson’s retirement marks the end of a remarkable chapter in New Zealand cricket. Widely regarded as one of the finest batters of his generation, he finishes as New Zealand’s highest international run-scorer with 19,346 runs across Tests, One-Day Internationals and T20 Internationals.
In Test cricket, Williamson amassed more than 9,500 runs, including 33 centuries and six double centuries, cementing his place among the game's modern greats. He had already stepped away from T20 Internationals in 2025 before announcing his complete retirement from international cricket.
New Zealand Cricket paid tribute to the veteran batter, describing him as one of the country's greatest-ever cricketers. Williamson is currently in England with the New Zealand squad for an ongoing Test series.
His retirement marks the end of an era for New Zealand cricket, leaving behind a legacy of consistency, leadership, sportsmanship and record-breaking performances.
