Jaishankar meets Putin in Moscow to discuss ties, global issues
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Monday, August 24, with the two leaders discussing bilateral relations as well as key regional and global developments.
Jaishankar arrived in Moscow on Sunday, August 23, for a two-day visit, which comes ahead of Putin’s expected trip to New Delhi for the BRICS summit scheduled for September 12-13.
The meeting assumes significance as India and Russia seek to further strengthen economic ties and expand cooperation across multiple sectors.
Earlier on Monday, Jaishankar held discussions with Russian First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov on expanding bilateral trade and economic cooperation.
“The India-Russia partnership has consistently demonstrated resilience and adaptability,” Jaishankar said at an event co-chaired with Manturov. He added that despite a complex international environment, bilateral engagement had continued to deepen, reflecting the mutual confidence and shared interests between the two countries.
Jaishankar is also scheduled to meet Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov during his visit to exchange views on regional and international developments, according to the External Affairs Ministry.
His Moscow visit comes about a month after he met Lavrov in Manila on July 22 on the sidelines of ASEAN-related ministerial meetings. The two ministers reviewed bilateral ties and discussed the Ukraine conflict and developments in West Asia.
During that meeting, Jaishankar had also conveyed India’s strong concern over the safety of Indian seafarers in the region.
