Tractors move in, Jaipur Polo grounds dug up after Centre takes over land

The Jaipur Polo Grounds in Delhi witnessed dramatic developments after central government authorities moved in following the recent takeover of the 15.2-acre property in the Race Course area, with reports indicating tractors entering the premises and parts of the ground being dug up.
The action comes after the Centre, through the Land and Development Office (L&DO), officially took physical possession of the iconic polo ground last week, following an eviction order issued against the Indian Polo Association (IPA). The authorities had declared the association an “unauthorised occupant” after its lease was deemed expired.
According to officials, the takeover was carried out after courts declined to grant a stay on the eviction, clearing the way for the government to enforce its order. The premises were sealed, notices were put up, and security personnel were deployed to secure the site.
The government has stated that the land is being reclaimed for “public purpose,” though no specific redevelopment plan has been officially disclosed. The move is part of a wider push by the Centre to regain control over several prime land parcels in Lutyens’ Delhi, including other high-profile institutions nearby.
The development has sparked concern among stakeholders and heritage supporters, as the Jaipur Polo Grounds have long been associated with India’s equestrian sporting tradition and elite sporting events in the capital.
