J&K Police recover digital devices in Srinagar jail

Close on the heels of the arrest of four Overground workers (OGW’s), including a woman from the Hazratbal area of Srinagar, a counter-intelligence wing of Jammu and Kashmir Police, Saturday, swooped down on the premises of Central Jail, Srinagar and recovered various communication digital devices.
According to official sources, the searches were conducted inside the highly fortified central jail premises in connection with a terror-linked case.
Before the searches were launched, a search warrant was issued by a court designated under the NIA Act in connection with FIR No. 06/2023 registered at Police Station CI Kashmir under relevant sections of the IPC and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
The raids were conducted based on certain technical inputs indicating the presence of suspicious digital signatures within the Central Jail premises.
The day-long searches were conducted across multiple barracks and blocks in coordination with central jail authorities.
“Incriminating material in the form of digital communication devices was recovered and seized during the operation,” an official said, adding that the devices will be sent for forensic examination to ascertain links, if any, with a larger terror network.
The latest security breach inside the central jail premises in Srinagar may prompt the prison authorities to initiate a fresh security audit across the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
The prison authorities will conduct a thorough investigation to identify the individuals involved in smuggling digital devices inside the jail premises.
Officials said they will investigate the possible roles of facilitators or collaborators and take legal action if warranted.
They said the operation is part of ongoing efforts to curb terror activities and dismantle support networks operating from within jails.
So far, the Union Territory administration has terminated the services of more than 90 Government employees with alleged terror links.
