India urges nationals in Iran to leave

Amid a rapidly evolving security situation in Iran, the Indian Government has advised nearly 9,000 Indian nationals currently in the country to leave at the earliest using any available means. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Friday that it is closely monitoring developments and remains committed to the safety and well-being of Indian citizens. Responding to queries about Indians in Iran, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that around 9,000 Indian citizens are presently residing there, most of whom are students. He said the Government has issued multiple advisories in recent days in view of the changing ground situation.
“We have issued two or three advisories in light of recent developments. Indian nationals in India have been advised to avoid travel to Iran at this time, and those currently in Iran have been advised to leave the country by whatever means are available,” Jaiswal said. He added that the Government is keeping a constant watch on the situation and will take all necessary steps to safeguard Indian citizens. “As far as our nationals are concerned, we are committed to doing whatever is required for their welfare,” he said.According to reports, India is also preparing contingency measures to assist Indian nationals who wish to return home, should the situation further deteriorate. These preparations are part of broader efforts to ensure a smooth and safe return for those seeking to leave Iran.
Earlier, the Indian Embassy in Iran issued an advisory requesting all Indian citizens in the country to register themselves with the mission. Officials, however, noted that the registration process has been slower than expected due to an ongoing internet shutdown in parts of Iran. To address this challenge, the MEA has advised family members of Indians in Iran to complete the registration on behalf of their relatives through the ministry's online portal. The Government has urged citizens to stay in touch with official channels and follow advisories closely as the situation continues to unfold. As of now there is no plan to starts evacuation for Indian nationals from Iran. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal.
