India pushes peace in PM Modi–Iran President talks

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday held talks with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, extending greetings on the occasions of Nowruz and Eid while also addressing the rapidly evolving security situation in West Asia. PM Modi strongly condemned attacks on essential infrastructure, underlining the risks they pose to both regional stability and the continuity of global supply chains, during the call. He further emphasised the importance of maintaining freedom of navigation and keeping vital maritime routes open, including the Strait of Hormuz.
The discussion comes amid heightened tensions in West Asia, raising concerns about regional stability, energy security and safety of critical international shipping routes. “Spoke with President Dr Masoud Pezeshkian and conveyed Eid and Nowruz greetings. We expressed hope that this festive season brings peace, stability and prosperity to West Asia. Condemned attacks on critical infrastructure in the region, which threaten regional stability and disrupt global supply chains. Reiterated the importance of safeguarding freedom of navigation and ensuring that shipping lanes remain open and secure. Appreciated Iran’s continued support for the safety and security of Indian nationals in Iran,” the PM posted on X following the conversation
This marked the second high-level conversation between PM Modi and President Pezeshkian since the onset of the conflict in late February. Their earlier interaction, on March 12, involved a detailed briefing by the Iranian President on the internal situation in Iran and his perspective on broader regional developments. Throughout the conversation, PM Modi expressed concerns over the continuing violence and reiterated the need to avoid further escalation. He reaffirmed India’s consistent call for dialogue and diplomacy as the primary path to resolve conflicts and maintaining peace.
The conversation with Tehran is part of India’s broader and sustained diplomatic effort to respond to the conflict. In recent days, the PM has engaged with leaders from the United Arab Emirates, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Qatar and Oman. These exchanges have focused on three key priorities: protecting the large Indian diaspora, ensuring uninterrupted energy supplies, and advocating for de-escalation through diplomatic channels. Follow-up discussions with several global leaders reinforced India’s stance that prolonged conflict could have consequences far beyond the immediate region.
