India enters green rail era as PM Modi flags off nation’s first hydrogen-powered train

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated India's first hydrogen-powered train, marking a major step towards cleaner and more sustainable rail transportation. The train will operate on the Jind–Sonipat route in Haryana, making India one of the few countries in the world to introduce hydrogen-powered rail technology.
Unlike diesel-powered trains, the hydrogen train generates electricity using hydrogen fuel cells, with water vapour being its only direct emission. The project is part of Indian Railways' broader plan to reduce carbon emissions and adopt environmentally friendly transport solutions.
The train has been developed using indigenous technology and is equipped with advanced safety systems to monitor hydrogen storage and operations.

The launch reflects India's growing focus on green energy, innovation, and modern railway infrastructure. Officials believe the successful operation of this train could pave the way for more hydrogen-powered trains across the country in the coming years. Along with improving sustainable mobility, the initiative is expected to strengthen India's clean energy goals and showcase its technological capabilities on the global stage.
