ICC unveils 'Super Series' and 'Super 7' format for 2027 ODI World Cup

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced a major overhaul of the 2027 ICC Men's ODI World Cup, introducing a new 'Super Series' and 'Super 7' format aimed at making the tournament more competitive and engaging. The World Cup, to be hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, will feature 14 teams and a revised three-stage structure.
Under the new format, teams will first compete in the Super Series, followed by the Super 7 stage, where the top-performing teams will battle for places in the knockout rounds.
The ICC said the changes are designed to ensure more high-quality matches throughout the tournament while giving emerging cricketing nations greater opportunities to compete against top-ranked teams.
Alongside the ODI World Cup changes, the ICC also announced a revamped structure for the 2028 Men's T20 World Cup, introducing a Super 10 stage and an eliminator round to increase competition. The governing body believes these reforms will improve fan engagement, create a more balanced tournament structure, and support the global growth of the sport.
