IAF to begin exercise Pitch Black 2026 in Australia with Rafale, C-17 and IL-78 fleet

The Indian Air Force (IAF) is set to participate in the multinational air combat exercise Pitch Black 2026, beginning in Australia on Monday, with a contingent comprising Rafale fighter aircraft, C-17 Globemaster transport aircraft and IL-78 mid-air refuelling aircraft.
Hosted by the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), Exercise Pitch Black is one of the world's largest multinational air warfare drills, bringing together air forces from several countries to enhance interoperability, operational coordination and combat readiness.
The IAF contingent includes Rafale multirole fighter jets, C-17 Globemaster strategic airlifters and IL-78 aerial refuelling aircraft. The deployment reflects India's growing commitment to strengthening defence cooperation with partner nations in the Indo-Pacific region.
During the exercise, participating air forces will undertake complex air combat missions, large-force employment drills, air-to-air refuelling operations and tactical flying exercises designed to improve coordination in multi-domain operations.
The biennial exercise offers an opportunity for participating countries to exchange operational expertise, strengthen military partnerships and enhance interoperability while operating in a realistic combat environment.
India's participation underscores its expanding strategic engagement with Australia and other regional partners under the broader framework of Indo-Pacific security cooperation. The exercise is also expected to further deepen defence ties between the Indian Air Force and the Royal Australian Air Force.
Exercise Pitch Black 2026 will witness the participation of military aircraft and personnel from multiple countries, making it one of the most significant international air combat exercises in the region.
