Hyderabad school fires teacher over alleged 'Kalma' homework for class 2 students

A private school in Hyderabad has terminated a teacher after she was accused of assigning the recitation of the Kalma and Surah Fatiha as homework to Class 2 students, triggering protests from parents and political groups. The controversy began after a student's family alleged that their child had been asked to memorise and recite Islamic prayers as part of a homework assignment.
Following the complaint, the school management dismissed the teacher and barred her from future employment within its group of educational institutions. Parents and local BJP leaders staged protests outside the school, demanding action against the management and an investigation into the incident.
Police detained several protesters as the demonstration intensified. Authorities have since begun an inquiry and are examining whether any provisions relating to educational guidelines were violated.
Police said they are verifying the allegations and collecting evidence before taking further legal action. The incident has sparked a wider debate over the inclusion of religious content in school education and the need to ensure that educational institutions maintain a secular and inclusive learning environment.
