Humayun Kabir’s remarks on Qurbani spark political row in West Bengal

A political controversy has emerged in West Bengal after Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) chief Humayun Kabir made remarks regarding qurbani (ritual sacrifice) and cattle slaughter rules ahead of Eid al-Adha celebrations.
Kabir stated that qurbani is an important religious practice and argued that it should continue despite recent restrictions and guidelines related to cattle slaughter in the state. His comments have triggered strong reactions from political parties and different groups.
The controversy follows recent regulations and notices issued under the West Bengal Animal Slaughter Control Act, which require adherence to existing legal procedures and conditions for cattle slaughter.
Political leaders and government representatives have maintained that the measures are aimed at enforcing law and preventing illegal activities rather than targeting any specific community or religious practice.
At the same time, several Muslim clerics and community leaders have appealed to people to follow government rules and observe religious traditions peacefully.
Some leaders also suggested alternative practices in order to maintain harmony and avoid tensions during the festival period.
The issue has intensified political debate in the state, with discussions focusing on balancing religious customs, legal regulations, and maintaining social harmony. Authorities are expected to continue monitoring the situation as Eid approaches.
