Gujarat completes 2.21 Crore cubic metres earthwork to strengthen water bodies

The Gujarat government has completed approximately 2.21 crore cubic metres of earthwork over the past three years as part of a large-scale initiative to strengthen water bodies and improve irrigation capacity across the state.
According to water resources department officials, the project exceeded its original target of 203 lakh cubic metres set for the period between 2022–23 and 2024–25.
The campaign focused on desilting and restoring canals, rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and other water channels to improve water flow and ensure irrigation reaches even the farthest agricultural areas.
Officials said structural improvement work also included clearing vegetation and blockages along thousands of kilometres of water channels, along with strengthening embankments and improving drainage systems.
The state government stated that the initiative was carried out across more than 1,400 sites using heavy machinery deployed throughout the three-year period.
Authorities added that the programme is aimed at improving water storage capacity and moving Gujarat closer to its long-term goal of becoming a water-surplus state.
