GST department seizes 50 tonnes of goods at Nizamuddin station

The Delhi Government’s Goods and Services Tax (GST) department, in coordination with railway officials, has seized a consignment of around 50 tonnes of goods, including 25 tonnes of copper scrap, at Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station. The total estimated value of the seized goods is around Rs 5 crore. The department had received intelligence that goods were being transported through the railway network without mandatory documents such as invoices and e-way bills.

Acting on the information, the department carried out the operation in coordination with railway officials. According to Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, the government’s aim is not just to take action but also to put in place an effective system that ensures businesses operate transparently and every due tax is collected.

The consignment had arrived at Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station on a train that originated in Renigunta, Andhra Pradesh. During the inspection, officials seized around 25 tonnes of copper scrap, estimated to be worth approximately Rs 3 crore. In addition, around 25 tonnes of mixed scrap, clothing and other goods were found, with an estimated value of around Rs 2 crore. The total estimated value of the seized goods is therefore around Rs 5 crore.

The seized goods were not accompanied by the required invoices and e-way bills. The department is now conducting a detailed verification of the goods and the documents associated with them. It is also examining statutory compliance related to the transportation of goods under GST law.

According to the department, the action is an important step towards strengthening surveillance of goods transported through the railway network, in addition to road transport.
