Govt invites applicants for post of DERC chairman

The Delhi Government has invited applications to fill the position of chairman of the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC), which has been vacant for over a year, along with two members of the panel.
A notice published on Saturday by the power department stated that the chairperson and members of the DERC should have expertise in engineering, finance, commerce, economics, law, and management.
Candidates are required to submit their applications to the Special Secretary (Power) via email at power.dercappointment@gmail.com by July 3.
Last month, the Delhi Government established a three-member committee led by retired Delhi High Court Judge S L Bhayana to oversee the selection of the chairman and two members of the DERC.
The chairperson’s position has been unfilled for nearly a year, impeding essential regulatory work, including the annual power tariff fixation and the collection of pending dues amounting to Rs 38,500 crore from the city’s three power distribution companies.
The chairperson and two members will serve a term of five years, starting from the date they assume office, or until they reach the age of 65, whichever comes first.
The chairperson and members will each receive a salary of Rs 2,25,000 per month, which will be adjusted based on any pension they may be receiving.
The last chairman of the three-member commission was Justice (Retd) Umesh Kumar, who retired in July 2025. In his absence, the two members, Surender Babbar and Ram Naresh Singh, are currently managing the commission.
