Govt crackdowns on illegal LPG refilling

The Delhi Government on Thursday conducted a crackdown on illegal LPG refilling in Alipur, uncovering unauthorised activities and registering a case against those involved, officials said. The action followed inputs from a sting operation aired on a national news channel on April 1. Acting on the information, a joint team of the Food and Supplies Department and Oil Marketing Companies carried out a raid at the identified location.
During the inspection, officials found that LPG cylinders were being illegally refilled at the premises. Authorities said such practices pose serious safety risks and disrupt the regulated supply of LPG. Three consumer passbooks were also recovered, which were allegedly being misused to obtain subsidised cylinders for illegal refilling and resale in smaller quantities. All materials linked to the illegal activity were seized at the site. An FIR has been registered against the accused, and further investigation is in progress.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta reiterated the government’s strict stance against black marketing and illegal diversion of LPG cylinders. She said the safety of citizens and the integrity of essential supply systems are non-negotiable.
The Chief Minister warned that any attempt to exploit consumers or manipulate LPG distribution will face strict action. She also assured that there is no shortage of LPG supply in the national capital. To strengthen enforcement, the government has approved the formation of 13 district-level teams. Each team will be headed by the Sub-Divisional Magistrate and tasked with taking swift action against violations. These teams will coordinate with various departments and act on intelligence inputs and public complaints.
Officials said the move is aimed at improving monitoring and ensuring a quick response to illegal activities. The teams will focus on curbing hoarding, unauthorised storage, overpricing, and illegal resale of LPG cylinders.
The Government has also urged citizens to report suspicious activities. Complaints can be lodged through designated helpline numbers between 9 am and 7 pm. Authorities assured that the identity of informants will be kept confidential and all verified complaints will be acted upon promptly.
In a step to ensure transparency, the government announced that daily press briefings will be held at 4 pm at Vikas Bhawan by the Food, Supplies, and Consumer Affairs Department. Citizens who are unable to attend can raise concerns through the helpline. Officials highlighted that illegal refilling not only affects fair distribution but also creates hazardous conditions due to unsafe handling and storage. Such activities increase the risk of accidents, including fires and explosions.
The government has directed enforcement agencies to intensify inspections across the LPG supply chain. This includes storage facilities, distribution agencies, transport networks, and retail outlets. Surprise checks will be carried out regularly to prevent violations.
