Government doubles LPG supply for migrant workers

The Delhi Government will launch a special outreach initiative to improve access to cooking fuel for migrant labourers, following a decision to double the allocation of 5 kg free trade LPG cylinders under the migrant category. As per an allocation order dated April 7, the daily availability of these cylinders has been increased from 684 to 1,368. The move follows approval by the Government of India for a 100 per cent increase in allocation under this category.
Officials said the enhanced supply is aimed at ensuring wider access and more equitable distribution of LPG among migrant workers across the Capital.
To support last-mile delivery, district magistrates have been directed to organise special camps in areas with a high concentration of migrant labourers. These camps are intended to make it easier for workers who face difficulty in accessing LPG through existing channels.
Migrant labourers can also approach district magistrate offices to request the organisation of such camps in their localities. The camps will function alongside the current distribution network operated by oil marketing companies through authorised LPG distributors.
Officials said coordination with these companies will be key to ensuring smooth and efficient supply. Eligible beneficiaries will be able to obtain 5 kg LPG cylinders at the camps upon payment and submission of Aadhaar as identity proof. The process is designed to be simple and accessible for workers who may not have easy access to formal distribution systems.
District Enforcement Teams have been tasked with supporting the initiative. Their role will include assessing demand in different areas and overseeing distribution to ensure transparency and orderly operations.
Officials said the effort is part of a broader push to strengthen last-mile delivery systems for essential services. The focus is on reaching vulnerable populations who often face barriers in accessing basic utilities such as cooking fuel.
The increase in allocation is expected to ease pressure on existing supply channels and reduce the gap between demand and availability among migrant workers. Authorities believe that improving access to LPG will also contribute to better living conditions by providing a cleaner and more reliable cooking fuel option.
The initiative comes at a time when the city continues to see a steady influx of migrant labourers working in construction, informal sectors, and small-scale industries. Many of them rely on affordable and accessible fuel options for daily cooking needs.
