India’s Oscar entry ‘Gondhal’ announces preview screenings from October 9

Marathi psychological thriller ‘Gondhal’, selected as India’s official entry for the 99th Academy Awards, will have exclusive preview screenings across six Indian cities from October 9, ahead of its wider theatrical release in six languages.
Written and directed by Santosh Davakhar, the film will be previewed in Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad and Bengaluru. The screenings will begin on October 9 at four theatres each in Mumbai and Pune before moving to the other cities.
The previews will be screened in Marathi and Hindi. Following the preview screenings, ‘Gondhal’ is scheduled for a wider theatrical release in Marathi, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada across India and overseas. The makers have not yet announced the date for the broader release.
Set against the backdrop of Gondhal, a traditional ritual from rural Maharashtra that combines music, dance and mythology, the film follows a newly married couple.
According to the film’s official synopsis, Suman, a young bride struggling under the weight of her circumstances, exploits her lover Sarjerao’s obsession with the Gondhal ritual, transforming the sacred tradition into what becomes a deadly psychological battle.
The film features Ishita Deshmukh, Kishor Kadam and Yogesh Sohoni in key roles.
Davakhar said the preview screenings are intended to give audiences an opportunity to experience the film in theatres, where its sound, atmosphere and visual elements can be experienced collectively.
The director said the film is rooted in Maharashtra’s cultural landscape and that its selection as India’s Oscar entry has made the opportunity to bring it back to audiences particularly significant.
