From Baghpat to AIIMS: Doctor’s journey inspires young women

On the occasion of International Women’s Day, the journey of Swati Tomar is being highlighted as an example of determination, academic excellence and dedication to women’s healthcare.
Originally from Baghpat, Dr Tomar became the first doctor in her family, marking a significant milestone for her household. Her achievement reflects years of consistent hard work and focus on education. Today, she is associated with All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, one of India’s most prestigious medical institutions.
Dr Tomar’s academic journey began at Vivekanand School, Anand Vihar in Delhi. It was here that she built the foundation for her future career in medicine. Teachers and mentors recall her as a focused and disciplined student who consistently performed well in her studies. Her excellence continued during her undergraduate medical training. While pursuing MBBS, she secured a distinction in Anatomy, demonstrating strong academic performance early in her medical career. She was also awarded the Dr S Ponnammal Gold Medal in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, a recognition that reflected her growing interest in women’s healthcare.
After completing her MBBS, Dr Tomar cleared the highly competitive postgraduate entrance examination of All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, in her very first attempt. She chose to specialise in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, a field that focuses on the health and well-being of women. According to those close to her, the decision was driven by a desire to contribute meaningfully to women’s healthcare in the country.
During her postgraduate training at AIIMS, Dr Tomar continued to receive recognition for her academic work. She won the Torrent Young Scholar Award and later emerged as the second runner-up at the national level in the same competition. These achievements further strengthened her reputation as a promising young medical professional.
Following her post-graduation, she completed her senior residency at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. Her commitment to patient care and professional ethics was formally recognised during this period.
