Four held for robbing 86-year-old woman
Delhi Police have arrested four people, including two sisters and their brother, for robbing an 86-year-old woman of her gold jewellery. The accused robbed the lady after entering her house in Bindapur on the pretext of inquiring about a room for rent.
Police said the accused robbed a pair of gold bangles, a pair of gold earrings and a gold ring, all of which have been recovered. DCP Dwarka Ankit Singh said the gang had targeted the elderly woman after spotting her wearing gold outside her home. He said the team moved quickly once the PCR call came in and worked through CCTV footage and local intelligence to track them down. Singh said the arrests were made at the accused persons’ house in Nanda Ram Park, where the stolen jewellery was recovered.
Police said the incident took place on November 14.
When a PCR call reported that two women and two men had forcibly entered the house and robbed the elderly woman before fleeing. Based on the caller’s complaint, a case was registered at Bindapur police station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Investigators scanned more than 150 CCTV cameras in and around the locality. One of the girls was identified after the footage was enhanced for clarity. The team then moved to her residence in Nanda Ram Park, Uttam Nagar. There, officers found all four suspects together. During their search, police recovered the stolen jewellery from both the accused and from the house. All four were arrested on the spot.
During questioning, the accused told police that they had passed through the street about ten days earlier and seen the elderly woman sitting outside her house with several pieces of gold jewellery on. They also noticed a board outside the house advertising a vacant rental room. That gave them the idea to use a room inquiry as a way to gain access to the house.
The arrested accused have been identified as 19-year-old Ratan Mehto, 27-year-old Raju Kumar, and the two sisters aged 24 and 20.
Police officials said further investigations are underway.
Police said Ratan and the two women are siblings, while Raju is a friend of the family.
Police said the two sisters visited the house about four to five days before the robbery. They asked about the room and, in this interaction, learnt that the woman stayed alone during the daytime. After confirming that she spent the day at home without company, the group waited for the right moment to strike. On 14 November, they arrived together, entered the house posing as potential tenants and overpowered the woman before robbing her jewellery.
Police said the quick arrests were possible because of the prompt response at the police station level and the detailed scan of CCTV footage in the area. Officers said the stolen gold being recovered in full has helped secure vital evidence in the case. Police officials said further investigations are underway.
