Fortis launches ‘Adayu’ to bridge India’s mental health care deficit

Fortis Healthcare has taken a landmark step in addressing India’s burgeoning mental health needs with the inauguration of a pioneering 36-bedded, fully integrated in-patient facility, ‘Adayu’, in Gurugram on Monday. Designed to transform integrated mental healthcare, the new hospital aims to bridge the critical infrastructure and treatment gap that currently burdens the nation.
Adayu is purpose-built to offer comprehensive psychiatric care, combining advanced clinical excellence, cutting-edge technology, and evidence-based therapeutic programmes. The dedicated facility reinforces Fortis Healthcare’s commitment to providing world-class services at a time of rising national demand. A multidisciplinary team, including psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, counsellors, and arts-based therapists, alongside nutritionists and physiotherapists, ensures a holistic approach to patient care and recovery.
The launch comes amid alarming statistics underscoring India’s severe mental health crisis. With one in every seven Indian citizens currently living with a mental disorder, the country faces an acute shortage of infrastructure and mental health professionals. Data shows just four public mental health beds per 100,000 population, contributing to a substantial treatment gap. Consequently, between 70per cent and 90per cent of people requiring long-term support do not receive adequate treatment.
Adayu, focusing on acute psychiatry care, de-addiction, and rehabilitation, is Fortis’ effort to tackle this systemic challenge and expand access.Dr Ashutosh Raghuvanshi, MD and CEO of Fortis Healthcare, heralded the opening as a “transformative milestone in India’s mental healthcare journey,” specifically addressing long-standing deficiencies in infrastructure and systemic integration. He confirmed that the Gurugram facility is the first in a series of dedicated mental health hospitals planned by Fortis, signalling a broader evolution toward a stronger, more inclusive ecosystem.
Highlighting the innovative approach, Dr Ritu Garg, Chief Growth and Innovation Officer, noted that Adayu will utilise precision medicine through pharmacogenomics, neuromodulation, virtual reality-based therapy, and AI-enabled platforms to tackle deficiencies in access and support. Dr Samir Parikh, Chairperson of the Mental Health Programme, Fortis Healthcare and Adayu, emphasised that the facility reflects their “long-standing commitment to ensuring accessible, compassionate and evidence-based mental health treatment in India.”
Fortis Healthcare reaffirms its commitment to closing the treatment gap, aiming to afford mental well-being the same priority, investment, and respect as any other medical speciality.
