Empty mind to receive the new
We take pride in what we know. Years of experience, qualifications, hard earned opinions about us built over a lifetime - we carry them like trophies and crowns, convinced they make us wise. But examine if there is a quiet danger in this pride: a mind so full of what it already knows has no space left to receive anything new.
Alvin Toffler in his book "Future Shock" wrote that the illiterate of the future would not be those who cannot read or write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn. We assume learning is only about adding - a new skill, a new fact, a new opinion and to stack onto the old. Rarely do we consider that growth sometimes demands the opposite: emptying, before we can be filled again. A young scholar once travelled to an ashram, proud of the scriptures he had already mastered, eager to be taught by a revered guru.
As he sat before him, reciting all he knew, the guru quietly picked up the young man’s kamandal, still half filled with water, and began pouring more into it. The water spilled over, running onto the ground. "Guruji, it is already full!" the young man said, startled. The guru smiled. "So is your mind. You came here to learn, but you arrived already full of your own knowledge. Empty yourself first - only then can I offer you anything true." Most of us walk through life like that overflowing kamandal - certain, full, closed. We listen to reply, not to understand.
Our mind always has to be empty to receive the new. Real learning begins only when we’re willing to unlearn first. Humbly accept that our cup is full and pour it out. Today, sit with one belief or opinion you hold strongly, and ask - am I still willing to learn something that contradicts it?
