Dry Gujarat logs over 300 alcohol-linked assault calls daily

Despite Gujarat’s long-standing prohibition policy, alcohol-related violence continues to place a significant burden on the State’s emergency response system, with official data indicating that police receive more than 300 calls every day involving assaults linked to intoxicated individuals.
According to emergency response statistics for the period between September 1, 2025, and June 30, 2026, the State’s 112 emergency helpline registered 83,747 alcohol-related assault incidents, making it the third most common category of police emergencies after general assault cases and public disturbances.
During the ten-month period, the emergency service handled 8.30 lakh police-related calls, averaging 2,741 calls per day.
General assault cases topped the list with 1.52 lakh incidents, followed by 1.35 lakh public altercations. Other major categories included road accidents, noise pollution, offences involving women and children, theft, domestic violence, and traffic-related complaints.
The data also recorded 19,065 prohibition-related offences during the same period.
Among districts and cities, Ahmedabad City reported the highest number of police emergency calls at 1,81,288, followed by Surat City (1,21,118), Vadodara City (57,279) and Rajkot City (40,742).
Launched on September 1, the 112 emergency response service integrates police, medical, fire, women’s safety and child protection assistance under a single emergency number, enabling faster response to critical situations across Gujarat.
