DMRC proposes new FOB at Pitampura metro station

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has prepared a proposal to build a foot overbridge (FOB) across the Outer Ring Road to improve access to the Pitampura-Prashant Vihar Metro Station, following intervention by Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta.
Officials said the proposal has been sent to the Public Works Department for approval. The planned bridge is expected to provide direct and safer connectivity for residents coming from Prashant Vihar and Rohini.
The move comes after several Residents’ Welfare Associations raised concerns about poor access to the metro station. Complaints highlighted that commuters from the Prashant Vihar side have no direct entry and are forced to take longer routes, causing inconvenience.
The Speaker had taken up the matter with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation after receiving representations, including from a senior citizens’ welfare group. He had urged authorities to ensure safe and barrier-free access, especially for elderly people, persons with disabilities, and patients. At present, the station is accessible mainly from the Pitampura side. This has led to difficulties for residents living across the Outer Ring Road, particularly along the Majlis Park to Deepali Chowk stretch.
In response, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation said it has prepared a feasibility plan for the construction of a foot overbridge. However, the project requires certain technical adjustments before it can be implemented.
Officials said the design must meet safety standards, including height requirements under an existing flyover maintained by the Public Works Department. This may require changes in road geometry to ensure compliance with engineering norms. The proposal is currently under consideration with the Public Works Department. Construction will begin only after the necessary approvals are granted.
Apart from the bridge, the metro authority has also proposed additional pedestrian-friendly measures. These include a zebra crossing near one of the station entry points to improve at-grade access for commuters. Officials added that a lift facility from ground level to the concourse is already available at the station. These features are part of a larger plan aimed at improving multimodal connectivity.
The broader plan has been submitted to the Unified Traffic and Transportation Infrastructure Planning and Engineering Centre for review. Implementation will be carried out by the concerned road-owning agency once approvals are in place.
Reacting to the development, Gupta said the proposal is a step in the right direction but stressed the need for comprehensive solutions. He said public transport systems must be accessible to all sections of society. “Safe and easy access should be ensured for every citizen, especially senior citizens,” he said. He also called for faster action so that residents can benefit from improved connectivity without delay.
