Dinesh Trivedi to head India’s Dhaka mission

The Union Government has reportedly chosen senior BJP leader and former Union Minister Dinesh Trivedi as India’s next High Commissioner to Bangladesh. Although the Ministry of External Affairs has not officially confirmed the appointment, the BJP announced Trivedi’s appointment and congratulated him.
Senior BJP leader Amit Malviya publicly extended his wishes via social media. “Congratulations to Shri Dinesh Trivedi, senior BJP leader, former Union Minister and Barrackpore MP, for being appointed as India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh,” BJP leader Amit Malviya said in a social media post on X.
Political analysts view his likely appointment as a departure from the traditional practice of selecting Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officers for such roles. Analysts suggest that choosing a political leader reflects India’s focus on strengthening ties with Bangladesh through more direct political engagement.
With his background in West Bengal politics, Trivedi is expected to bring valuable regional understanding to the role, especially on issues concerning border relations, stability and security.
Trivedi, a former Member of Parliament from West Bengal’s Barrackpore, joined the BJP in 2021 after leaving the All India Trinamool Congress. Over the years, he has held key positions, including Union Railway Minister and Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare.
Experts believe this move underscores New Delhi’s intent to strengthen ties with Dhaka and prioritise diplomatic engagement with its eastern neighbour. Trivedi’s roots in West Bengal and his political background are expected to give him a nuanced understanding of cross-border issues, particularly those related to regional stability and security. Meanwhile, Khalilur Rahman, Foreign Minister of Bangladesh, recently highlighted the evolving nature of bilateral relations.
The appointment of Dinesh Trivedi has come as a surprise in diplomatic circles, particularly within the IFS fraternity. However, both Dhaka and New Delhi appear to have anticipated this move, sensing that India would appoint a political figure to build a stronger bridge between the two countries. There is hope that this approach will foster a more dynamic and positive bilateral relationship between Bangladesh and India, with the political appointment expected to further strengthen ties between the two nations.
Trivedi has experience in Parliament and the Government. Known for his administrative background and political adaptability, he has played key roles in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha. Born on June 4, 1950, in New Delhi, Trivedi pursued his education at prestigious institutions, including St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata and St. Xavier’s Collegiate School. He also studied at the University of Texas at Austin, which contributed to his global outlook.
