Dhaka expands visa suspension for Indians

Diplomatic relations between India and Bangladesh faced fresh strain on Thursday after Dhaka announced a sweeping expansion of visa restrictions for Indian citizens, extending curbs beyond the capital to several major Indian cities.
Under the revised policy, Bangladesh has suspended the issuance of nearly all visa categories for Indian passport holders, with the exception of business and employment-related visas. The decision applies to Bangladeshi missions in Kolkata, Mumbai and Chennai, in addition to existing restrictions already in place at missions in Delhi, Agartala and Guwahati.
The announcement was made late Wednesday by Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and comes amid a period of unease in bilateral ties following political developments in Dhaka under the Yunus-led administration. Officials confirmed that consular operations at the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata have been completely shut down, bringing visa processing and related services to a standstill. Meanwhile, diplomatic missions in Mumbai and Chennai will no longer accept applications for tourist, medical, or other non-essential travel categories from Indian nationals.
According to Bangladeshi authorities, the revised measures are part of an administrative review of consular services and will remain in force until further notice. No official timeline has been provided for a rollback or reassessment of the restrictions.
The move is expected to affect thousands of Indian travelers who regularly visit Bangladesh for tourism, medical treatment, cultural exchanges and family visits. Business travelers and individuals with employment-related requirements remain the only categories eligible to apply under the new framework.
New Delhi has not yet issued a formal response to the expanded restrictions. However, diplomatic sources indicated that the developments are being closely monitored, given the long-standing people-to-people ties and economic interdependence between the two neighboring countries.Observers note that visa policy shifts often signal broader diplomatic undercurrents, and the latest decision may further complicate efforts to stabilize relations in the near term.
