Demography Mission to make borders impenetrable: Shah

The mission aims to prevent artificial demographic changes in Border States and elsewhere, thereby protecting local livelihoods, land, and national security — Union Home Minister Amit Shah
Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced on Friday that the Union Government will soon launch a “high-powered demography mission.” This mission, first declared by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last year, is central to a broader effort to secure India’s borders and curb illegal infiltration.
Shah also outlined an upcoming ‘smart border project’ aimed at fortifying India’s 6,000-km-long international borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh using advanced technology to achieve complete impenetrability.
At the BSF Investiture Ceremony and the annual Rustamji Memorial Lecture, Shah said the mission originally announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in August 2025 is now set to be implemented once a committee is formed.
Shah stated the mission would help identify vulnerable infiltration points for the BSF to strengthen border management.
The Home Minister emphasised that the initiative is key to the Government’s zero-tolerance policy against illegal immigration, particularly from Bangladesh and Myanmar. The mission aims to prevent artificial demographic changes in Border States and elsewhere, thereby protecting local livelihoods, land, and national security. Shah underlined that every infiltrator will be identified and expelled, comparing this drive to the anti-Naxal campaign and calling for the BSF’s resolve.
First announced in the Prime Minister’s 2025 Independence Day speech, the mission is designed to address illegal immigration and demographic shifts, particularly in border areas, and to support the BSF and other agencies. This announcement coincides with the nationwide Smart Border project, which will use technology such as drones and radars to monitor the 6,000-km-long frontiers with Pakistan and Bangladesh over the next year.
Shah assured BSF troops that the smart border project would be launched in the force’s 60th year and would make the borders impenetrable. The Modi Government will establish a strong security grid along the borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh, using modern technology for continuous monitoring and rapid responses to intrusion attempts.
The Home Minister urged BSF troops to remain vigilant and to ensure that any conspiracy to alter India’s demography through illegal infiltration is defeated. He highlighted that the current BJP-led State Governments in Tripura, West Bengal, and Assam are fully aligned with the Centre’s zero-tolerance policy towards infiltration. Shah said his ministry would soon convene a meeting with the chief ministers of these three Border States. This meeting will further strengthen coordination on border management and security issues.
Shah’s remarks reinforce the need for border security beyond physical fencing. Effective protection relies on coordinated action with the State Governments of Assam, Tripura, and West Bengal, as well as the involvement of local police and panchayats, to efficiently detect and deport infiltrators. This approach marks a strategic shift in the Government’s internal security policy, from dealing with left-wing extremism to countering external demographic threats.
The Rustamji Memorial Lecture is an annual event that pays tribute to the legendary police officer who laid the foundation of the BSF and shaped India’s border management architecture in the post-independence era. Senior BSF officials, including the Director General, attended the lecture. The force has observed its Raising Day celebrations and related events this year, with a focus on modernisation and technological upgradation.
