Delhi’s vehicle count hits 87.6 lakh; 8% rise in 2025-26

The total number of motor vehicles on roads in Delhi till 2025-26 is 87.61 lakh, showing an increase by 7.93 per cent compared to 2024-25, according to the Economic Survey of Delhi 2025-26 report released on Monday. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Monday tabled the report on the first day of the Delhi Assembly’s Budget session.
As per the report, the total number of motor vehicles on the road in the NCT of Delhi as on March 19, 2026, is 87.61 lakh, showing an increase by 7.93 per cent compared to 2024-25. GNCTD has banned Diesel Vehicles more than 10 years old, and Petrol Vehicles of more than 15 years old, hence deregistered 66,20,160 vehicles up to 2025-26 (March 19, 2026). Also, the number of vehicles per thousand population was 522 in 2025-26 (as on March 19, 2026). “The highest number of increase was registered in the two-wheeler category, including motorcycles and scooters. Till March 19, 5,927,775 two-wheelers were registered, making up for 67.65 per cent of the total number of vehicles,” the report States.
DTC is the largest public transport entity in the City-NCR, transporting about 24.29 lakh passengers and covering 5.01 lakh km per day, a reduction from the previous year of 2024-25 when the average daily ridership was registered at 25.58 lakh per day. As of March 2026, DTC, DoT has a fleet size of 6100 buses, comprising 1002 non-AC low floor (CNG) buses, 760 AC low floor (CNG) buses, 2750 AC low floor (Electric-12 Mt.) and 1588 AC low floor (Electric-9 Mt.) buses. DTC is also operating an International Bus Service on the Delhi-Kathmandu route.
“In the transport sector, there are 86 buses on 27 routes for night bus service. Under its gender sensitisation program for bus crew undertaken by DTC, 30 ladies special buses are also being plied during peak hours on 30 routes. DTC is also operating an International Bus Service on the Delhi-Kathmandu route,” the report States.
The number of bus breakdowns has also increased; in the current financial year, 929 bus breakdowns were registered, an increase from 897 in 2024-25. This year, a total of 1503 electric buses broke down in 12-metre and 9-metre categories; the breakdowns are per 10,000 buses, the report added.
Under the electric vehicle push, till March 19, a total of 47,01,04 electric vehicles have been registered in Delhi, the report added. Presently, the Delhi Metro network consists of about 352 Km, including 58.497 km of NCR, 22.909 km of Airport Line, and 2.008 km extension of Airport Line to Yashobhoomi.
After completion of Phase IV, the total length of metro lines, including NCR lines, will be about 463 km.
